How my life got busy

I remember being a PhD student so vividly. Sitting behind my computer all day, hanging out with my collegues, relaxingly reading a book in the sun… Those were the days. But to all good things comes an end. And now it’s all over.

It all started in that last year of writing the thesis. All of a sudden there were teaching responsibilities, meetings to run, presentations to be given, and papers to be written. And it was so exciting! People enjoyed my topic, I had to present my models and surveys at companies, and slowly but surely my diary started to fill up. “What’s one more meeting?” I kept on thinking. “Isn’t it great when your PhD snowballs?” I said to myself. And with those innocent questions the fun and relaxed times died away. Sure, I’m publishing in the leading journals, I’ve got myself some talented PhD students, and the pay is much better now.

But where were those times when I could write a PhD, play computer games all day, enjoy spending time with my girlfriend, run a one man company, and have some afterthoughts as well? Please don’t forget that I too once was a PhD student, with time, seas of time, to chat with my fellow PhDs. Please don’t forget that I too once could discuss the elections in the US for hours on end, without an actual point (since Obama won this election about three months ago already).

So, my fellow bloggers, may I remind you once more: It all gets…

WORSE!
